Bakelietplaat is een hard, dicht materiaal gemaakt door warmte en druk uit te oefenen op lagen papier of glazen doek geïmpregneerd met fenolhars. Deze lagen van laminaties zijn meestal van cellulosepapier, katoenen stoffen, synthetische garenstoffen, glazen stoffen of niet -gewoeld stoffen. Wanneer warmte en druk op de lagen worden uitgeoefend, transformeert een chemische reactie (polymerisatie) de lagen in een hoogwaardige thermohortuur industrieel gelamineerd plastic.
